What is Hyuganatsu? (Adapted from the Hyuganatsu Research Lab)

As its name suggests, Hyuganatsu is a citrus fruit native to Miyazaki Prefecture.
It was discovered as an accidental seedling in Soi, adjacent to Jōgasaki in Akae Village, former Miyazaki County (present-day Miyazaki City), during the Bunsei era (1818-1829), which corresponds to the end of the Edo period.
Hyuganatsu is a unique citrus fruit that is rare in the world.

Its color, flesh, aroma, and taste are all unique and unlike any other citrus fruit.
One of its distinguishing features is that it's eaten in a slightly different way than typical citrus fruits. If you peel Hyuganatsu with your fingers, you won't be able to appreciate its unique flavor. The way to eat it is to peel only the outer skin thinly, like peeling an apple, and eat it together with the soft white pith (albedo).
Only by eating the slightly sweet white rind and the refreshingly tart flesh together can you truly experience the "true deliciousness" of Hyuganatsu.
